Ocean Beach, Jan 28, 2007 12:50pm

I love living so close to the beach. It is the most calming place that I know. The clouds were so beautiful today. These two images were taken within 10 minutes of each other.

Sadness...

This is the beautiful Armand Marsaille doll that I recently got on ebay. I took it to my studio today to photograph it and after taking only a couple of photographs it fell to the cement floor and the head is in hundreds of tiny pieces. It was sooooo sad!

Meso American Figurine

From Oaxaca in January of 2006. These sculptures were housed in the Rufina Tamaya Prehispanic Museum House, which was a couple of blocks from the Zocalo and our hotel. It was full of Meso American sculptures.

Virgin w/stars

This Virgin Mary statue is from a church in Oaxaca (last year's Mexico trip). As I was going through my "old" images, I discovered that she has some seriously heavy (running) mascara too!

Princess Cake 2006

Here is our birthday cake from last year. Sylvia's b-day is the day after mine and Chris' is a week after.

This is the best cake. It is from the Copenhagen Bakery in Burlingame. This year we got a cake from Victoria Bakery in North Beach wasn't as beautifully decorated but just as yummy to eat. I'll have to get the photo from Sylvia.

Hotel NYC

This is an image from last summer when I was in New York City
for a few days. I stayed at the Park 79 Hotel which was near one
of my favorite cafe's, The Columbus Bakery. They have the best
Oatmeal! (right, how good can oatmeal be??? realllllyy good!)
They also have the cutest logo on their to go coffee cups,
I'll see if I can dig it up.

More Jesus

All three of these images are from the
first church that I visited in Guanajuato
(I've got to track down the name of the church).
There were many different statues of Jesus as well as statues of other saints, etc. I will post more later as I go through the thousands of images that I took on my trip!

It is so liberating to just take photos and not be worried about what they mean or why I'm drawn to them (though, I'm certainly thinking about that) but it did not paralyze my process this time.

Soap from Mexico

Everyone knows how much I love handmade, sweet smelling soap. I managed to find some yummy bars while in San Miguel and I thought they were packaged cutely as well. They are creating a wonderful aroma in the little upstairs room in my house.

"Kitty" on the roof

He isn't the most photogenic cat that I know but this photo is kinda cute. He loves to be outside, he is very agile and likes to bring home rats to show what a good hunter he is! He has the most amazing eyes.

Day before going back to work...

I started out by attempting to go to my favorite new store in Oakland, called Urban Indigo but unfortunately they are NOT open on Monday :(

I ate at one of my favorite mexican food joints, Tucabaya on 4th street (Dona Tomas' sister taqueria). This is the delicious veggie tamale. Yummm-meeeee!! I'm sure some of the guests thought it was strange that I was photographing my meal.

I popped into Moe's on Telegraph in Berkeley to pick up a book
published in the 70's on the Mummies of Guanajuato
(not exactly what I had in mind but good research for my book.
The photographs were in b/w and shot by
Archie Lieberman with a story by
Ray Bradbury).

Virgin Niche

This is an example of some of the wonderful niches on most corners in San Miguel de Allende.

Such a beautiful little colonial town.

Mascara Mary

Mary seems to be heavily made up, hmmmm. This image was also taken in a church in Guanajuato.

Virgin w/ Kerchief and Victorian Neckline

This statue was in one of the very ornate churches in Guanjuato. The churches were fascinating. I will definitely go back to Guanajuato and spend some more time.

Museo Momias

These are images from the mummy museum in Guanajuato. Unfortunately, I only had about 20 mins in the museum because the guide on my trip said "once you've seen one mummy, you've seen them all".

I thought they were really fascinating and I was bummed I had such little time to check them out. The light was very low in the museum and unfortunately they didn't have much information in the bookstore, just a couple of postcards.

Some of them had clothes on (to the right is a detail of the shoes that one of them was wearing). Some of them had hair and the one in the center above was holding a precious little doll.

Guanajuato Views

Views from above the city of Guanajuato, MX. I went on a day tour with Michele and Lee, the couple I met from Vancouver.

El Cristo

This Christ figure is at the little church near the the Biblioteca on Insurgentes in San Miguel de Allend. It is a small church but has wonderful statues.

Antique Store in San Miguel

This is one of the crucifixes from the very cool antique store (Hacienda la Diligencia) where I bought the antique Mexican mask (I'll have to take a photo of it and upload it later). They had amazing stuff here. I took quite a few photos but the light wasn't great.

Lux Perpetua, San Miguel de Allende

I love these candles! However, the ones that were for sale looked too new. The wrapping was pure white. This is an example of a detail of one of the displays at the very cool furniture store just up from the Instituto.

Houston Airport, Rainy window

I had the window seat on this flight. I took tons and tons of photos. This is similar to the anti-landscapes but now with an additional layer.

The rain was mesmerizing.

Vintage Doll, San Angel, Mexico City

This is one of the 3 vintage dolls that I bought from an artist in the San Angel district in Mexico City in January 2006.

Estudios de Artistas

This is the cool sign for the artists studios at the former textile factory, Aurora in San Miguel de Allende. It is now a home for many artists, design showrooms and antique stores.

Santos that got away

January 9th, 2007. College Ave, Berkeley. After negotiating a decent price and calling to place a "hold" on these wonderful santos, I returned home only to have a message saying that someone else bought them both! I was soooo sad!
